Archer's Grace was given the summer off following a pleasing handicap debut at Salisbury and has plenty of scope for improvement. Magic Box also arrives fresh, but TOASTMASTER has maintained a fine level of consistency since joining Michael Herrington and was a solid third at York last time. The winner went on to run well in the Great St Wilfrid, while the runner-up went one better subsequently, so the form is strong. Galba and Berlinetta are a couple more to consider.
WATCH PARTY cost 300,000gns as a yearling and was sent off favourite for her debut at Newmarket. She could only manage third but the winner is exciting, while the second went close again next time, and Roger Varian's Fillies' Mile entrant can make it second-time lucky. The rest with experience don't make all that much appeal, but there are a handful of interesting newcomers in opposition. Speaking Tree was bought for 220,000 euros and is bred to be quicker than Sea The Stars filly Sea La Roma. You're Sensational has to enter the equation as well.
FLICK OF AN EYE was a 150,000-pounds breeze-up buy and knew his job when third on debut at Newbury. He had a subsequent winner well behind him and natural improvement might well suffice. I Am Royal's Kempton second is stronger form than Channel Islands' runner-up finish at Ffos Las, but If You Like could be the primary threat. William Haggas landed this prize 12 months ago with the top-class Division and this year's representative cost 140,000 euros as a yearling.
Javelot was strongly fancied to build on his debut Yarmouth fourth and got the job done, although he had to work harder than expected at Wolverhampton and the form is nothing special. Rocket Boots and Agitator have both been gelded since struggling in a hot Glorious Goodwood nursery so better is anticipated. Asgar has been given a workable mark but maybe fellow handicap newcomer MANDOLIN RAIN is better treated, with the well-bred Wootton Bassett filly starting off 66 after showing promise in a couple of novice events.
Echalar regained the winning thread at Doncaster and is respected with Billy Loughnane back in the plate, while Hamlet's Night was last seen finishing down the field in the Swinton Hurdle but merits close inspection. However, it might be worth taking a chance on MYTHICAL GUEST. He was 7lb out of the handicap in a warm Ascot contest, so his effort is best forgiven, but his earlier Newmarket performance was full of promise and returning to 10 furlongs should bring out the best in him.
Although well beaten in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse, CHERRY BAKER was far from disgraced. James Owen's filly had been steadily progressing at a lower level previously and she could resume that improvement on the back of a few months on the sidelines. Gold Digger has contested some warm events, including the aforementioned Royal Ascot sprint, since a comeback success at Windsor. Eased 3lb after a midfield finish at Glorious Goodwood, she has the ability to go close and so does the in-form Space Bear.
Cases can be made for each of these, but DIOMED DUKE edges the vote. The four-year-old maintained a blistering gallop to score at Lingfield and is beginning to form a strong partnership with Olivia Haines. Fiorella Princess was only collared in the dying strides on her stable bow at the same venue and she's feared most, ahead of Twilight Fun.
Top weight Toastmaster has been on a fine run of form and must have a chance once again dropping into a Class 5, but James Fanshawe's filly ARCHER'S GRACE is open to plenty of improvement yet and has an action that suggests some ease on turf will suit. A winner on the AW in April, she's been off since her turf debut in May - she finished fourth at Salisbury in a handicap - but returns at a time with her yard in form. Piscean Star goes off a reduced mark and could have a say back on turf making him third choice.
Several very appealing newcomers here, especially Sea La Roma, who has a fine pedigree but may need further. You're Sensational is another from a top yard worthy of consideration on debut, but we'll go with WATCH PARTY who has the benefit of some experience, finishing third on her debut at Newmarket. She was closing at the line then and there's some hope from her pedigree and action that she'll handle the cut in the ground. Blue Corn is one to consider at bigger odds. She clearly needed her debut experience at Newbury, getting hampered just as she was becoming outpaced, and could do better here for her top yard.
This can go to FLICK OF AN EYE, who shaped well on his debut at Newbury and should improve plenty for his good yard. Soft ground would be an unknown, but it is for all in this. Channel Islands has the benefit of two runs, improving nicely from start one to two, and he's just favoured to the Richard Hughes runner I Am Royal as the danger. Bad Dreams is an interesting newcomer as a relation of Group 3-winning sprinter Washington Heights.
Wolverhampton novice winner Javelot looks capable of better now handicapping although soft turf would be an unknown. The selection is ASGAR, the Clive Cox-trained colt who ran well on soft ground over 6f at Goodwood on his second start before failing to run to the same level tried on the AW last time. Stepping up to 7f could suit now handicapping and he's taken to defy an opening mark of 75. At the opposite end of weights Mandolin Rain is open to improvement after just two runs and needs respecting also.
Hamlet's Night has been off since the spring when disappointing over hurdles and he could easily go well back from a break and returning to the Flat. Soft ground would be an issue, though, and it's instead worth going with PERCIVAL, who has been given a chance by the handicapper and should appreciate getting on some softer ground for the first time since leaving Andre Fabre. Arthur's Realm is fresh for the time of year and comes in as third best with the ground suitable.
This can go to ZIGHY, a consistent filly who has handled soft ground in the past and brings a solid and consistent run of form into the race. The cheekpieces she ran well in last time are retained. The 4yo Lady Roxby is a tough and consistent sort who should again go well, with her proven with cut underfoot, while Cherry Baker also has soft-ground experience and should be suited to the drop in grade.
Let's side with CREATIVE QUEEN, who likes plenty of cut under foot, having won over 6f on soft back in the spring, and her most recent run, when sixth on heavy ground at Haydock, pointed to her still be capable from her current mark - she didn't get the best of runs. Diomed Duke is in good form, winning two of his last three, and he must go well once more despite slight reservations over the ground. Fiorella Princess, back to form when runner-up at Lingfield last time, is best of the remainder.
