CITY OF JOY may have bumped into a high-class performer when he chased home Swiss Storm at Newbury a fortnight ago and it will take an equally useful prospect to beat him today. The form of Sersar's fourth a Yarmouth on debut was boosted when the third won at Newmarket last week and he could prove to be the main danger to the selection. Of the newcomers, Archer's Arrow is from the family of Joshua Tree while Baashiq has the likes of Nayef and Nashwan on his page.

Nonchalant sets the standard at these weights but, while he is entitled to the utmost respect, the son of Oasis Dream can be taken on with MININGROCKS. The Declan Carroll representative did not get home over 1m4f last time out but he is better judged on his nine-length win at Beverley at the end of August. It also has to be noted that his finishing effort may be enhanced today by the application of a first-time tongue-tie. Ronya appears to be the pick of the remainder.

A typically competitive renewal of this contest with the likes of Medici Banchiere, Rainbow Mist and REPTON all dropping out of Group company, whilst Mazyoun, Orewa and Wick Powell arrive here following fine efforts in sales races. The preference is for Repton, who represents last year's winning stable and the drop back in trip looks likely to suit. Last time out he found 7f on good to soft ground too far for him and the same happened when he was fifth in the Vintage Stakes the time before that, although he was less than four lengths behind War Decree on that occasion. Rainbow Mist was far from disgraced when fifth in the Flying Childers last month. Medici Banchiere's Gimcrack sixth puts him in with a shout, while Mazyoun only found one too good for him in the big sales race at Doncaster's St Leger meeting.

Convey has bags of talent, as his form shows, and looks sure to come there travelling strongly. However, it's fair to say that he isn't the most resolute when push comes to shove and he might find one or two too strong again. Certificate is a fast-improving gelding and could make a splash on his first try at Pattern level, but a chance is taken on the returning LATHARNACH. To make a winning return following 428 days away from the racecourse is a big ask, but form such as his second to Gleneagles last June stands out a mile and Charlie Appleby has his string in great order at present. If anywhere near peak fitness, he must go close.

FATHER BERTIE finds himself just 1lb higher than when winning this race 12 months ago and shades the verdict in what looks a fiercely competitive renewal. His overall course record is an impressive one (won twice and placed twice from five visits) and he certainly wouldn't be winning out of turn following a number of near misses recently. Dawn Mirage is another who has been running consistently well and it will be difficult to keep him out of the frame, while Beardwood, Normandy Knight and Fuwairt are others to keep an eye on.

MYSTERIAL did well to win as he did at Pontefract last month when making up plenty of early ground from a wide draw and a 3lb rise might not be enough to prevent a follow up. The six-year-old has an excellent record on fast ground and won here over course and distance on his only other visit to the Teesside track. Age Of Elegance is likely to prove popular in the betting chasing a hat-trick on stable debut for Roger Fell, while Hibou represents the excellent Iain Jardine and has been getting closer to a second career victory in recent weeks.

Twentysvnthlancers is enjoying a good spell of form and ran well in second at Musselburgh last month despite a 3lb rise. He bumped into a well-treated rival last time out and should go well, but preference on this occasion is for Robert Cowell's KIRINGA. She won well at Wolverhampton a fortnight ago, defying a wide draw and a career-high mark and clearly remains on the upgrade. Run Rio Run bounced back to form at this venue recently, while Space Artist could go close at a price.

A return to fast ground and the booking of crack 5lb claimer Adam McNamara should see SHOWBIZZY in a better light after her average performance at Bath earlier this month. The daughter of Showcasing is effectively back on her last winning mark now and could claim a modest event. Innocently has won here in the past but his winless run has shown so sign of ending over the last few weeks despite a couple of close shaves, while Fruit Salad and Euxton also enter calculations in a competitive finale.
