G'day Aussie arguably sets the standard following his second at Perth last month and he could put in an improved effort if he settles better early on in this contest. That said, the preference is for NUCKY THOMPSON, who has been running consistently well on the Flat in recent months and the yard had a hurdles debutant winner last week. Rue Balzac and Zainat are others to make the shortlist.

Ballybolley was unfortunate to bump into a potentially high-class prospect in this sphere last time out, to whom he had to give 6lb, and he is the one to beat. However, ACTINPIECES makes most appeal. She won first time out last season and the daughter of Act One progressed well throughout the campaign and ended up finishing a close second in a Listed event at Cheltenham in April. Of the remainder, Shear Rock is considered.

DEISE DIAMOND chased home two useful-looking prospects when third on his hurdling debut earlier in the month and he merits the utmost respect. Cloud Monkey put in a career-best effort over hurdles last time and he is another who can make his presence felt in this event. The consistent Tell The Tale should be on the premises, while Improved would have a big chance based upon the pick of his form from last season.

LORD WISHES struck over 2m5f at Cartmel in June and although he disappointed over 2m at Perth last time, there could be improvement forthcoming now he steps back up to this longer trip. Presenting Junior has been off the track since May, when finishing third over 2m5f at Cartmel, and remains feasibly treated. The pick of the remainder may be Alderbrook Lad, who has dropped back down to his last winning mark.

FREDERIC was eased down in the closing stages when scoring over an extended 2m2f at Market Rasen last month and may be capable of defying a 10lb rise. Marquis Of Carabas was outpaced in a novice hurdle over 2m at Worcester last time and has place claims now stepped up in trip on his return to the handicap ranks. Another worthy of consideration is Raktiman, who returns from a spell chasing on his first outing since April.

It could pay to side with MONBEG RIVER, who either won or finished runner-up in each of his five starts when standing up last season (disputing second when a last-fence faller at Perth latest), most interestingly when an 11-length scorer first time out. That ability to run well fresh helps ease the concerns over his 173-day absence and he gets the vote to strike. Past C&D scorer Trust Thomas and Attimo are others to note.

Everything points to a massive run from RETURN FLIGHT, who is the sole runner on the card for the stable who won this race last year with subsequent Cheltenham Festival winner Superb Story. He fairly bolted up on his seasonal reappearance (and first start for Dan Skelton) at Southwell recently and Bridget Andrews' valuable claim cancels out the majority of his 7lb penalty. He is fancied to see off Nuts Well and Jacks Last Hope.
