FITZ FLYER hasn't won since joining his current yard in March but has run some big races in defeat, none more so than when touched off by half a length behind the reopposing Tax Free over C&D in August. He's backed that effort up with a solid Ascot third off this mark latest and deserves compensation soon. Pearl Blue would be a big player if there was any juice in the ground while Steps and Kyleakin Lass are closely matched on their latest Haydock run and also merit consideration.

A typically competitive three-year-old handicap and the vote goes to John Gosden's LAHAAG, who made a winning handicap debut on good to soft ground latest. He's 7lb higher for his troubles but is bred to stay this extra furlong and there should be further improvement to come. Chapter Seven handles this ground well and he is expected to make his presence felt again along with Lady Macduff, third on easy ground at Pontefract earlier in the week.

Odooj has kept good company in Pattern races over C&D (fourth in Gimcrack) and at Kempton the last twice and sets the form standard. However, preference is for dual C&D winner ROYAL RASCAL, who was third in Group 2 company here in August and may have found the ground too slow at Ayr latest. Mary's Daughter warrants respect having finished ahead of the selection at Ayr last time, as she, too, boasts winning C&D form in handicap company.

Bubbly Bellini has developed into a smart sprinter in Ireland this year and warrants respect along with Portland winner Doc Hay and Ayr Silver Cup winner Mass Rally, both of whom are capable of making their presence felt at this level. Ayr Gold Cup fifth Colonel Mak is only 1lb higher than his last winning mark and another in with place claims, but preferred ahead of all is the progressive HEERAAT, who bids for a course hat-trick and could be a Pattern performer in the making.

Lancelot Du Lac has progressed with each run and probably wouldn't need to improve much upon the form shown when second at Yarmouth latest to take a hand in the finish. With an official rating of 83, however, the form standard set is surmountable, and MYSTERY BET, who shaped with so much promise when a head third in a blanket finish on debut at Haydock, is taken to strike now upped in trip. You da One is also high on the shortlist.

Cape Tribulation landed a high-profile hurdles double at the Cheltenham and Aintree festivals earlier in the year and looks very well treated in this sphere off a mark of 80. He did, however, fail to exploit the same mark over C&D in May, and for that reason, preference is instead for RIVER DRAGON who followed his comfortable 2m Newcastle win with a ready success over hurdles at Hexham ten days ago. In his element when the ground is this testing, he has plenty going for him today. Mashaari and French Hallow are also considered.

Shamdarley has been threatening to win for several months and advertised his well-being when third in the Silver Cambridgeshire at Newmarket latest. A 1lb rise is unlikely to prevent another bold showing from Michael Dods' charge, but he has often found a couple too good and CALAF, seeking a treble and up 3lb for his distance victory at Ayr, is taken to prove too strong here. Crown Counsel, Fazza and Tres Coronas would have made more appeal from lower draws.
