George Scott could well be whistling Carole King’s ‘It Might as Well Rain Until September’ rather than Bay City Rollers ‘Shang-a-Lang’ as he studiously makes his daily inspections around Eve Lodge Stables in Hamilton Road with rain pouring from the skies, the same weather that gave the trainer a much-desired first domestic Group 1 victory at Epsom in early June.
The underfoot conditions that day were certainly music to the ears of Scott as Bay City Roller posted his most impressive victory in the Coronation Cup by beating Jan Breughel by 10 lengths, with 2025 Derby winner Lambourn and world-beater Calandagan strung out with the washing.
Scott recollected: “Obviously we were blown away by his performance in the Coronation Cup. We thought he was going in as the forgotten horse, and as you know he was fantastic.”
A more routine double at Doncaster on Friday courtesy of Zubaru and Rizal took him to 27 winners for the season, leaving the Newmarket trainer just under £46,000 short on the domestic front of passing the £1million barrier for the first time, and the omens are good for so much more this term.
Scott kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about the mainstays in his team.
