Marco Botti’s year ended on a high note when Giavellotto secured £1,352,113 when landing a famous victory in the Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin in November, and his stable star will soon be looking to top that up in the Sheema Classic at Meydan next month.
It was a highly-satisfactory year on the domestic scene too, with the Newmarket trainer notching 53 wins and £950,912 in prize money, with Giavellotto again topping the charts with his contribution of £172,966.
Botti said: “We had a very encouraging season, and it was good to finish off the year winning in Hong Kong with Giavellotto, and hopefully we can progress again this term.
“We are on schedule for the Sheema Classic at Meydan in early in April and we couldn’t be happier with him. He looks in good form but there is still three weeks to go, and that is a long time for racehorses. He got stronger last year, and as he showed in his last race in Hong Kong he has also got faster. He showed us something that day which we hadn’t seen before, so we will campaign him over a mile and a half and then go a mile and six in the Yorkshire Cup, and try and win it for a third time. He has a few options, so the Sheema Classic will tell us where we go.”
Botti also has Giavellotto’s half-brother Calumet under his care, and the trainer kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about his team at Prestige Stables.
